1930-1934 Bugatti Type 50

The 1930-1934 Bugatti Type 50 is a “derivative” Bugatti built on a scaled-down Type 46 Royale chassis. The gearbox is in unit with the rear axle. Up front was the new, large twincam eight, which was allegedly patterned on the U.S. Miller racing unit. This was a direct replacement for the Type 46

, and big and luxurious by any standards. There was a choice of two wheelbases and several sumptuous bodies. It sold in small numbers because of the Rolls-Royce prices, the spine-numbing ride, all the engine noise, and the definite “mechanical” character. It’s a very desirable Bugatti for the sportsman rather than the sybarite.

Ultimate Guide to Fake Wedding Cakes

Choosing the right kind of cake for your wedding can be a real hassle. Between finding a baker, deciding on a flavor and selecting a style, there’s a good chance you’ll end up spending more time messing with this glorified pile of fondant than anything else on your to-do list. And wedding cakes are expensive — really, really expensive. In fact, for a bride on a budget, paying for this one dessert may cost you that luxurious reception site or (gasp) even force you to return a night or two early from your honeymoon. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Have your cake and eat it, too, by faking it.
Fake wedding cakes are exactly what they sound like. They’re round Styrofoam molds covered with fondant or Perma-icing (a type of non-edible, artificial icing), and they look just as good, if not better, than the real thing. In fact, like high-end wedding cakes, most fake cakes are custom-designed for your wedding, so you can choose the color, style, number of tiers and ornamentation — including options like silk, fondant or real flowers — when placing your order. Regardless of how you decide to fake it

, you’ll still get to cut the cake, and your guests won’t go hungry.
The top tiers of most fake cakes are real. This is the part you’ll cut, share with your new hubby, and save for your one-year anniversary. The counterfeit confection will then be wheeled out of sight, and your servers will return with slices of sheet cake to feed your guests. Some versions of fake cakes are entirely inedible, with a hidden compartment holding a couple of real pieces for the bride and groom.
We know, it seems like an elaborate hoax. But even if you’re having a relatively small ceremony, you can expect to spend at least several hundred dollars on a basic, nondescript wedding cake. Brides with larger guest lists will end up paying hundreds more, and if you’d like to sweeten the deal with fancy fillings, gourmet frostings and a few fondant flowers, this once-in-a-lifetime dessert may cost you a month or two’s salary.
A fake cake, on the other hand, will be the centerpiece of your reception. Just like any other wedding cake, it will be custom-designed according to your preferences, and it will probably cost $300 or less. By choosing a fake cake, you’ll also avoid those half-baked cake-cutting fees that many reception sites charge, which can range anywhere from $1.50 to $4.00 per slice, depending on the venue. Going with a fake cake gives the impression that you forked out for a top-tier cake, but you’ll pay only a slice of the cost.
But They’re Still Fake¬°¬≠
Fake cakes, however, aren’t all fondant and flowers. In the end, they are fake, and pulling out a couple of stashed slices from a secret compartment will never be as romantic as a traditional cake cutting. You might not be parading around in a 2-carat cubic zirconia wedding ring, but you are deceiving your guests. It shouldn’t be a big deal for most brides (after all, what’s a good ceremony without a few props?), but it could be embarrassing if someone discovers the truth. It probably won’t happen, but wedding guests can be unpredictable — especially if there’s an open bar — so you can never be sure. However, the risk is minimal, and if you’re a budget-conscious bride having to make some tough choices, a fake cake could be the perfect solution to your wedding-planning woes.
What’s faker than a fake cake? A cake you rent for a few hours, then return. There are several cake-rental outfits online, and all you have to do is select your cake, pay a deposit and ship it back after the reception. Depending on the size, weight and design of the cake, you may end up paying around $150 to $250, but some cost upward of $400.

1953 Die Valkyrie

America’s custom coachbuilders were but a shadow of their 1930s selves after World War II, but you could still drive something very special — like the 1953 Die Valkyrie — if you knew where to go and had enough money.
Classic Cars Image Gallery
In 1952, a Cleveland real estate baron named Metzenbaum wanted a modern car with the spirit of the great early-1940s. He wanted the luxury of the Lincoln Continental and the power of Cadillac’s brilliant overhead-valve V-8, first offered for 1949. Famed Milwaukee-based industrial designer Brooks Stevens did the rest.
The result was called Die Valkyrie, after Brunhilde and the other mythical “sisters of the wind” immortalized in Wagnerian opera. Per Metzenbaum’s wishes, Stevens began with the 125-inch-wheelbase chassis and 331-cubic-inch V-8 of the contemporary Cadillac Series Sixty-Two.
Leaving both pretty much alone, he replaced the stock body with a striking four-seat steel convertible shell bearing rakish long-hood/short-deck proportions and both a solid removable roof panel and a skimpy “rag top.” The last, Stevens recalled, was only for “getting you home if it started to rain.”
Die Valkyrie’s most radical aspect by far was its huge, sharply vee’d combination bumper/grille, deliberately chosen to emphasize what was under the hood. One wag snidely termed it a “snowplow,” but at least it was different. Small parking lamps were set into the V’s wide outriggers, which bisected the headlamps before wrapping around to continue as side moldings.
Several elements make Die Valkyrie look a lot newer now than it actually is. Recessed cowled headlamps and a flat hood nearly level with the front fenders forecast Big Three styling by at least three years. In the 1960s, Cadillac itself would adopt taillights much like Die Valkyrie’s compact, vertically vee’d units.
This was also Stevens’ first use of the “Washington coach” door line with its distinctive upward sweep that not only concealed long door openings (for easier back-seat access) but made a natural two-tone color break — highlighted in the starkest possible way with white forward and black rearward. Fan-motif inner door panels were equally distinctive. The dash was stock 1953 Cadillac.
To build Die Valkyrie, Stevens enlisted the Spohn Works of Ravensburg, West Germany, mainly for its meticulous craftsmanship. Metzenbaum made noises about backing up 100 copies, and the car did cause a minor stir at the 1953 Paris Auto Show, but just six Die Valkyries would ever be built.
Stevens believes only three came to the U.S. The one shown here, number two, was once driven by Mrs. Stevens. You can see it at the Brooks Stevens Museum in suburban Mequon, Wisconsin

1956-1957 Lincoln

The 1956-1957 Lincoln Premiere was Lincoln’s new premium series in these years, relegating Capri to second-class status. The all-new design featured a longer, lower, wider, and heavier body typical of the ’50s, a revised chassis on a three-inch-longer wheelbase, and a brand-new “True-Power” V-8 with 285 horses. Styling was right up to date, inspired by the Futura show car: peaked headlamps, partially covered rear wheel openings, wrapped windshield, and a long rear deck tapering to give the straight-through rear fenders a hint of fins.
The 1957 facelift brought stacked quad headlamps, much more prominent fins, and the addition of a four-door hardtop called Landau. A short-lived design, it was replaced by even larger, unit construction models for 1958.

The Best Deodorants With No Aluminum

Deodorant manufacturers often use aluminum because it blocks the pores that produce sweat. If you have sensitive skin or are easily irritated by chemicals, you might experience problems with this type of deodorant. Aluminum-free deodorants are sometimes referred to as organic deodorants or natural deodorants. Products labeled as natural or organic should contain only natural materials. Crystal Deodorant, an alternative to aluminum-based deodorants, uses alum. Alum works the same way as aluminum but won’t irritate the skin

. You may prefer using a product with mineral salts or minerals. Stone deodorants use all-natural ingredients that block the pores and keep the body from sweating.
Avoid deodorants that lack aluminum but use zinc instead. Zinc can create the same type of skin irritation as aluminum. If you’re prone to skin breakouts, you should also avoid products that contain artificial fragrances and colors. National Geographic’s Green Guide website states that some deodorants also use diethanolamine or formaldehyde, both of which may bother your skin. The Green Guide also warns against using deodorant on inflamed skin or broken skin. Keep in mind that even all-natural or organic deodorants include ingredients that can harm you when absorbed into your bloodstream. Also, follow the directions on the deodorant. Crystal stone deodorants, for example, require that you wet the stone before applying it as a deodorant.
Some deodorants, including the Dr. Hauschka and Weleda brands, are available only online or through high-end retailers. Burt’s Bees and Arm & Hammer both make natural, aluminum-free deodorants that are sold in grocery stores, discount stores, drugstores and pharmacies. Some products are also available from beauty supply stores. If you decide to shop online, look for stores that offer free or discount shipping.
While some aluminum-free deodorants cost up to $30, others are available for $5 or less. The Weleda and Dr. Hauschka products are at the higher end of the spectrum, retailing for around $25 as of 2010. Crystal Stone deodorants are a mid-priced option

, retailing for around $10 to $15. The company behind the Crystal Stone deodorant also makes a smaller and cheaper travel size, so you can test the product before committing to one of the larger sizes.

How Personal Submarines Work

The Earth is made up of about 70 percent ocean, with an average depth of about 3,200 feet (1,000 meters). That’s a lot of water. Since man first figured out they could build vessels that would stay afloat, they took to the seas. This was fun for a while, but with so much going on beneath the surface, it wouldn’t take long before we longed to dive deep to see what’s going on down there.
The submersible watercraft was first envisioned by Leonardo da Vinci in one of his famous sketches in the early 1500s. Sometime in the late 1570s a British mathematician and innkeeper named William Bourne scratched out some plans for a submarine. He wrote:
“It is possible to make a Ship or Boate that may goe under the water unto the bottome, and so to come up again at your pleasure. Any magnitude of body that is in the water, having always but one weight, may be made bigger or lesser, then it shall swimme when you would, and sink when you list.”
It may be 1570s English

, but the concept was undoubtedly that of a submarine. He’s basically saying that if you make the boat heavier than the weight of the displaced water, it will sink (purposely). Fast forward about 50 years when a Dutch inventor named Cornelius van Drebbel built the first working submarine. Of course, there were no engines at this point, so Drebbel and his 12 oarsmen hit the Thames River and submerged for about three hours. The first military sub, The Turtle, was built in 1776 by David Bushnell and was powered by hand-cranked propellers. The United States military used The Turtle during the Revolutionary War, to middling success.
Skip ahead again to the 1890s, when the first modern-style subs were built. Two rival inventors developed these two designs, which were purchased by the militaries of the United States, Russia and Japan. These subs were powered by petroleum or steam on the water’s surface and used electric motors under water. The same inventors came up with the idea of the torpedo at the same time, making the new submarine a very unique war tool.

Common Household Items to Use in a Bath for Skin Care

Commercial bath add-ins smell nice and feel lovely on your skin, but they can be pricey and contain chemical additives. When you want to save money and be assured of exactly what you’re adding to your bath water, turn to common and simple household items to do the job.

, itchy, irritated skin. Use a kitchen blender to grind any kind of unflavored oatmeal into a powder. Pour the powder into a sock or length of pantyhose and hold it under the faucet as you fill the tub. The oatmeal can leave a slippery residue, so take care when stepping out of the bath and be sure to scrub the tub afterward.
Use fresh oranges to perfume your bathwater with their sharp citrus scent. The acidic properties of the juice help to clean oily skin and exfoliate dead skin cells, exposing soft, new skin underneath. Simply slice up an orange into thin rounds and add them to hot bathwater.

. The lactic acid in milk acts as a skin softener and exfoliant. Add a few drops of an essential oil, such as lavender, if the smell of warm milk isn’t all that desirable. Your reward will be supple and glowing skin all over your body.

1958 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88

It might have been hard at the time for the loyal Olds?mobile customer to believe, but somewhere deep inside, the 1958 models, including the 1958 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88, were based on the same shells that had served the ’57s. That’s because the ’58s had new looks from front to back and roof to road.
Styled under the direction of Art Ross, who had headed the Oldsmobile Studio since 1947, the 1958 Oldses broke with recent marque styling trends. The elliptical “jet-intake” grille of prior years was replaced by a full-width horizontal-bar grille and massive bumper. “Hockey-stick” side trim gave way to a projectile shape in front and horizontal strakes in the rear, which gave the unfortunate impression of being on a collision course with each other.
Revised roofs featured an undivided backlight, which alleviated criticism of the three-piece window used on the ’57s. About the only visual tip that this was an Olds?mobile was the continued use of high-mounted, round taillights. Wheel?base was up by a half inch (to 122.5), and ’58s were 2.2 inches wider than the ’57s.
The anchor of the 1958 Olds lineup was the Dynamic 88 series. (Like quad headlights and optional air suspension, the Dynamic sobriquet was new.) Powered by a standard 265-bhp “economy” version of the Olds 371-cid V-8, it came in seven models, including a $2,834 Holiday two-door hardtop that drew 50,7897 orders.
The original Alaskan White-over-Banff Blue Dynamic 88 hardtop coupe featured here is owned by John Strewe, of Lake Zurich, Illinois. It is equipped with optional power steering and brakes

Pros and Cons of a Hair Weave

Celebrities and socialites alike use the hair weave to get the long, luxurious locks that people envy. The hair weave has gone mainstream and is a popular item at hair salons across North America. If you are considering getting a hair weave, you should first weight the pros and cons of getting one done. While it may seem like the ideal solution to boring hair, you may have to deal with pain to get the soft, shiny locks that you crave.
A typical, sewn-in weave takes about four hours to complete, depending on the extent of the weave. This is good news for women who are fickle with their hair and love to change it up. A weave can even come in different colors, so you don’t have to dye your hair with harsh chemicals to get electric pink streaks throughout. The change is immediate and lasts for about three months.
A hair weave can sometimes be painful to have placed in your hair. This is because in order to place the weave, the hairstylist must braid the hair tightly along the scalp. After the whole head has been braided, the tracks of hair are then sewn into the braids

. This pulling and braiding can be painful, especially if you are sensitive. New bonded hair extensions may be a better choice if you have a low pain tolerance.
Women with shorter hair may not want to wait months and years for their hair to grow out. Similarly, some women may have received a haircut that is shorter than they wanted. In these cases, a hair weave is an ideal solution; you’ll be able to get the length, without having to wait for your natural hair to grow. A hair weave comes in lengths up to 30 inches, so you can get the length of hair that you want, instantly.
A hair weave can be an expensive habit to start. With each weaving session costing around $150, as of time of publication, and weaving needing to be done every three months, hair weaving can be an expensive beauty routine to keep up. If you are looking for a less expensive version, clip-in extensions may be a more economical choice.
After years of coloring, perming and styling, hair can become weak and damaged. A hair weave can help protect your natural hair. Binding it into the braids means that the hair weave takes all the abuse of styling tools and products — and they’ll be removed in three months. Your natural hair can take time to be protected while bound. Some women even find that when their hair is damaged to the point of breaking, a weave can help them gain some of their hair strength back.
Unfortunately, not all hair weaves are created equally. With the case of the weave

, what you pay for is what you get. That means that a less expensive weave may be obvious and fake-looking. The best weaves, as noted by Vita’s Hair Salon in Maryland, are made out of natural human hair. These are the ones that can match the color and texture of real hair, blending in with yours. A weave made of synthetic hair is less expensive but may also look fake, as it does not mimic the real texture of hair. Be wary of a cheap weave that does not look real.
