Effects of Gold on Skin

Egyptians believed the healing powers of gold could cure all manner of physical, mental and spiritual ailments. Romans used gold preparations for treatment of skin lesions and sores. It is believed that Cleopatra wore pure gold for a radiant complexion. In ancient Chinese medicine, gold was the secret to youthful skin. Today, gold leaf is used in the treatment and rejuvenation of skin conditions. The application of gold compounds to medicine, called chrysotherapy, reduces inflammation beneficial in the treatment of a variety of diseases, but this therapy often causes adverse gold-related skin reactions.
Many luxury spas use 24-carat gold leaf treatments to hydrate, firm and moisturize the skin, claiming reduced fine lines and wrinkles and resulting in smooth and radiant skin. A news feed from the World Gold Council site reported a gold leaf facial treatment created in Japan declaring gold leaf put on the face naturally rejuvenates skin and reduce wrinkles

. According to the creators of the treatment, gold locks in moisture and keeps skin firm by maintaining collagen in the skin and inhibiting the breakdown of elastin. A study appearing in the ¡°The Journal of the American Medical Association¡± reported the effect of gold leaf on low blood-flow skin ulcers. Findings showed a significant improvement in mouth legions and skin ulcers with no adverse reactions to gold leaf observed.
Allergic reactions to gold are rare but can result from direct skin contact. According to a publication in the ¡°Daily News Analysis,¡± some people display allergic skin responses to gold jewelry or dental crowns, says Dr. Thomas Fuchs of Goettingen University Hospital in Germany. After a survey of various dermatological clinics and hospitals, he concluded pure, unalloyed gold can trigger allergic reactions. The degree of allergy varies from immediate dermatitis on hands and feet from contact with gold items to reactions only after many years of skin contact.
Chrysotherapy is a successful treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, but dermatological reactions to gold limit therapeutic usage. A study done at Tel Aviv Medical Center reported in ¡°Annals of Rheumatic Diseases¡± was discontinued when patients given gold salts reacted adversely with symptoms including gold-induced skin rashes. After the study was stopped, coincidentally the patients with skin rash experienced remission in their rheumatoid arthritis. The patients without skin rash did not.
Gold is thought to have antibacterial properties and to help transport oxygen molecules into the skin for cell renewal to treat ulcers and inflammatory disorders of the skin. Some skin-healing benefits of gold were demonstrated by an in vitro chrysotherapy study by the University of Miami School of Medicine, which found that concentrations of gold administered in skin inhibited prostaglandin synthesis. ¡°The Journal of Investigative Dermatology¡± reported that the findings suggest gold is beneficial in treating autoimmune diseases and inflammation, and inhibits skin enzymes involved in blister formation.

1969 Mercury Cougar

Mercury raised its muscle car profile with the introduction of the 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. Taking its cue from such rivals as Z28 and SS Camaros, as well as Ford’s own Boss 302 and Mach 1 Mustangs, Ford introduced the Eliminator in April 1969. The Eliminator came with a range of engines, from the Trans Am-inspired solid-lifter 302-cid small block to the 428-cid Cobra Jet big block.

Mercury had introduced its sporty coupe in 1967 as a luxury-touring alternative to the pony-car herd. It had mature styling and upscale interior appointments and was built on a Mustang chassis stretched by three inches to provide a longer, ride-enhancing wheelbase.
Mercury in these years was deeply involved in racing. It backed a variety of record-setting Comet and Cougar drag specials, as well as NASCAR-winning Cyclones

, though not for lack of trying. Cougar contributed with the ’68 GT-E, which like the Mustang, opened the year with an available 390-horsepower 427-cid V-8, then switched to the 428 Cobra Jet. The image was still more Euro luxury touring car than American muscle, though. It wasn’t until the release of the 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator that Mercury was able earn a reputation for muscular Detroit iron.
Not all 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminators were that powerful. In all-out acceleration, the available 290-horsepower 302 was overmatched by the Cougar’s weight, but the 428 Cobra Jet benefited from the relatively generous wheelbase. Grip was slightly better off the line than in the shorter Mustang, and quarter-mile times were every bit as good.
Like Mustang, the Eliminator offered the 428-cid CJ with and without Ram Air, as well as in Drag Pak guise with an oil cooler and a 4.30:1 gear-ratio Detroit Locker rear axle. The Eliminator didn’t use the shaker hood; its standard scoop was functional only when Ram Air was ordered. A blacked-out grille, side stripe, and front and rear spoilers enhanced the muscular look, and Mercury offered the Eliminator in a palette of “high-impact” blue, orange, and yellow exterior colors.
More impact could be obtained over dealer parts counters, which offered not only headers and dual-quad carburetors, but such exotic hop-up components as deep-sump oil pans and quadruple Weber carburetor setups. From the factory, or with these available parts, the 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator was true American muscle.

The Best Men’s Watches for a Man With Small Wrists & Hands

As any avid watch collector understands, choosing a watch is as much about your physical features as it is about the watch itself. For men with smaller wrists and hands, it is crucial to choose a watch that isn’t overpowering, ill-fitting or poorly shaped. Although your wrists and hands may make it difficult to choose a suitable watch

, many top watchmakers offer non-traditional styles that will complement them.
A watch should fit snugly enough to stay in place as your wrist moves normally, but not tight enough to leave a mark or dig into your skin. Depending on your wrist size, this may limit the straps and bracelets available to you. For smaller wrists, bands with removable links may not be able to fit your wrist properly, as only a few links can be removed. This can limit your choices to watches with leather or nylon straps.
Although round-face watches are the most popular, watch connoisseurs recognize that square, rectangle and oval watches are a staple in any collection. If your wrists or hands are slightly thinner than the norm, a square or oval face often fits snugly and compliments your wrist shape. Rectangular and ellipse watches are best suited to bonier wrists, because the face is often thinner and able to fit beside wrist bumps instead of directly on top. If you have smaller hands, a classic round watch with a narrow band should fit just right.
A 2011 New York Times article pointed out a burgeoning trend in the watch world — the gradual size increase in popular men’s watches. Although many notable watchmakers are prone to producing watches with massive faces and thick straps, a bigger watch isn’t necessarily more stylish than a smaller design. Thin styles from many respected watchmakers incorporate minimalist faces with emphasis placed instead on the quality of the movement; other styles focus on unique faces with maximum metallic shine from a gold, bronze or stainless steel casing.
The guts of your watch can affect the look and feel as much as the exterior qualities. A mechanical movement relies on movement of a rotor, and is wound either manually or by your wrist movement. Mechanical movements are perfect for those with slim wrists, as these movements can be quite compact, creating a thinner watch altogether. A quartz movement is also a solid option, especially for buyers on a budget. Quartz movements are light and durable, relying on a battery for power, and come in all shapes and sizes. Don’t let your wrist size limit your style, get the watch you’ve always wanted by keeping fit, face, size and movement in mind.

Weight Loss Retreats for Women

Many women struggle with the day-to-day pressures of losing weight. Between work, raising children, keeping house

, social engagements and the other business of being a busy woman, healthy eating and regular exercise can fall by the wayside as your weight creeps up. One solution for many women trying to kick-start a healthy living program is to take a vacation at a weight-loss retreat.
Many spas or retreats let you tailor your daily activities to suit how strenuous — or easy — you want your retreat to be. Choose anything from classroom lessons on how to read nutrition labels to fitness classes, from long hikes to massages to melt away tension and sore muscles. Even unusual offerings such as life coaching, horseback riding and tarot readings are available at some spas.
According to “USA Today,” the expensive, luxury weight-loss spas that used to be the norm are facing stiff competition. Affordable spas that favor fitness education over white-glove treatment are on the rise. While typical weight-loss retreats for women used to average $400 per day, the newer options can cost $200 to $249, including accommodations, all meals and most activities. Long-term options, with stays of up to 12 weeks, are available for women who want to make significant lifestyle changes. These programs, however, can cost up to $25,000.
In addition to dropping a few pounds, which all of these vacations are designed to do, they offer other benefits. Women report returning home more relaxed and feeling like they have new skills to aid them in the battle of the bulge. Through a weight-loss retreat, some women have switched to a vegetarian or other diet, taken up yoga or daily meditation, or learned how better to deal with stress.
Though a week or two at a weight-loss retreat can jump-start a new or stalled diet and exercise plan, it is not a replacement for living a healthy lifestyle. Work healthy foods and fitness into your daily life for long-lasting fitness results. Dedicating a short time each day to your health and diet goals can help you to win the weight-loss race. If this is an ongoing concern for you, investigate programs that offer real-life education, taking women to grocery stores and restaurants and showing them how to make healthy choices a habit.

How to Bake a Moist Jamaican Fruit Cake

Traditionally served at weddings and holidays on the island, Jamaican fruit cake resembles its Christmas counterpart commonly found in the United States, but may have a drier and crumblier texture since it’s not soaked in liqueur. Without soaking the cake in liqueur, a Jamaican fruit cake can still come out moist when using the proper recipe and baking techniques.
Soak dried fruit pieces, such as apricots, pineapple, cherries, cranberries and raisins in dry red wine for at least 3 weeks prior to baking the cake. Soaking the fruit plumps it and infuses it with both the flavor of the wine as well as the moisture. Keep the soaking fruit in the refrigerator to prevent mold growth. Drain the fruit before using.
Set your butter out to allow it to come to room temperature at least 30 to 45 minutes before mixing the cake batter. Bringing the butter to room temperature allows it to cream with the sugar easily and blend with the dry ingredients fully to disperse the fat throughout.
Cream together butter and sugar using an electric mixer. Beat in molasses

, extracts, citrus juice and rum. Using the juice from a lime or lemon makes the cake more tart, but orange juice sweetens the cake slightly, cutting back on the need for sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time until well combined.
Sift together the dry ingredients into a separate large bowl. Stir in the wet ingredient mixture a little at a time until fully incorporated.
Fold the plumped fruits, citrus zest and chopped mixed nuts into the batter. Do not over stir. Folding in the pieces helps keep the cake tender. Pour into two greased round cake pans.
Bake the fruit cake in a preheated 300 F oven for 80 to 90 minutes. Baking the cake at a low temperature for a long period of time helps hold in the moisture. Cool the cake at room temperature before frosting.

What are Sedentary, Moderate & High Activity Exercise Levels?

Your heart is a little like a machine that gets dialed to low, medium or high depending on the intensity of the exercise you’re doing. However, machines aren’t human, so if you’ve been leading a sedentary lifestyle a low-intensity workout can still dial your heart to high. Activity levels are often determined by how hard your heart works when you exercise. They also describe the types of activities and exercises you typically perform in a week and your overall fitness level

.
A sedentary activity level describes someone who gets little to no exercise. If you spend a lot of time sitting at a desk or watching television, without working out regularly, you¡¯re considered sedentary. The activity you do perform during your daily routine is low-intensity. When you exercise at a low-intensity level, you are able to breathe normally, and are able to sing while you perform an activity. Under normal conditions, low-intensity exercise will not make you sweat. Examples might include taking an easy walk, stretching, shopping and light gardening. At this level, health care professionals will likely recommend that you start a regular exercise regimen to strengthen your heart and improve overall health.
If you do exercise but get less than the 2 1/2 hours per week of the moderate aerobic activity that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends, you¡¯re at a moderate activity level. With aerobic exercise at a moderate intensity level, you breathe harder and deeper than at a sedentary level. You can’t sing any tunes, but you can hold a conversation as you take a brisk walk, which is a good example of a moderate level exercise. After around 10 minutes of exercise, you should break into a sweat. Mowing your lawn, riding a bike on level surfaces and playing doubles tennis are examples of moderate exercises.
If you work out vigorously for at least one hour and 15 minutes every week, you¡¯re at a high activity level. At a vigorous level of exercise your heart is working at maximum efficiency. Talking will be difficult at this level and you will breathe rapidly. You will break into a sweat after just a few minutes doing exercises like biking or hiking on hills, jogging, swimming laps, playing basketball or high-intensity aerobics.
It¡¯s helpful to know your maximum heart rate to monitor your progress during exercise. Subtract your age from 220 to determine your maximum heart rate. Your target heart rate will fall between 40 to 85 percent of the maximum heart rate when you are exercising. If you’re sedentary, aim at the lowest point of your target heart rate

. After a few weeks you may be able to increase your exercise level to moderate, working your way up to the high end of your target heart rate. If vigorous activity is too much for you, you can gain the most benefit by exercising moderately for five hours per week.

Polyester Vs. Silk Dresses

Once upon a time, there were few choices in terms of dress fabrics. Cotton has historically been a mainstay in every woman¡¯s closet, while silk is considered a luxury material. However, polyester is an increasingly common dress material due to its affordability and durability. When choosing between polyester and silk dresses, consider the benefits and potential risks of each type.
Polyester is a synthetic, or man-made material. It is made out of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, which can be woven into materials of different thicknesses. Because polyester is man-made, it is widely available in numerous pieces of clothing on the market, including dresses. Silk, on the other hand, is not as popular because of its rarity. The material is derived from silkworms, and clothing manufacturers refine it through a process called sericulture.
Between the two dress materials, polyester is considered the most durable, even though silk is considered one of the strongest natural fibers. Silk dresses tend to wrinkle easily, particularly when they get wet. If silk fabric does get wet or is exposed to heat, it loses its strength

. Because of silk’s delicate nature and required maintenance, polyester is often chosen for its resilience over silk. However, silk is much smoother and softer. The exact occasion you¡¯re wearing the dress for can dictate the material you choose. Polyester dresses tend to be most versatile for sitting and for on-the-go. Polyester dresses can be machine-washed, requiring dry cleaning only if there are embellishments. Silk dresses should always be professionally cleaned to prevent damage.
Polyester and silk are both ideal for cooler weather. Both fabrics are heavier than cotton or linen. When it is hot, polyester particularly tends to stick to the skin, making related dresses quite uncomfortable to wear. If you are attending an outdoor event during the summer, silk is your better option over polyester because it is slightly lighter. Still, you might get hot quickly, so make sure you wear quality lotions and makeup that won¡¯t sweat onto the dress and leave unsightly marks or stains.
Due to the meticulous nature of silk

, dresses of this material are more expensive. The more material used to make the dress, the more costly it is. This is why silk wedding dresses are among the most expensive in the fashion industry. Polyester is much more affordable because it is a man-made material. This fabric has come a long way in terms of aesthetic appeal since it first gained popularity in the 1970’s. If price is your determining factor when buying a dress, then polyester may be your best bet.
